Meishi Smile is the emotive electronic project of producer Faye. Their disparate influence and sound has been described by NPR as “part shoegaze, part chillout, part noise, part power-electronics, yet so cohesive it feels like a single genre.” The project has released on labels such as Captured Tracks, Cascine, Maltine Records and Secret Songs. Since 2014, Meishi Smile has gone from net underground, utilizing vocoded vocals colliding with maximalist trance on their first full-length “LUST,” towards the confrontational harsh noise and sentimental electronic mannerisms of their 2015 follow-up “...Belong,” which led to their recognition as a chaotic live act and a pioneer of the hyperpop genre. In 2021, Meishi Smile released “Ressentiment,” the first to feature a full band, which included Sílva on Guitar, Jason on Bass, and Zachary Roy on Drums. Thematallicaly referred to as “a 25-minute metal album about the cosmic wrath of God and systematic violence." In contrast to “Ressentiment,” the “melencolia i” mixtape reinstates the project’s core elements of electronic pop and ambient. Originally written during the inception of Meishi Smile, the songs were continuously reworked till present day, visually and musically evoking an impressionistic sense of timelessness, longing, and reflection, while also questioning the limitations of nostalgia and the false safety of better times. Faye also performers and records under the ambient project, Yuko Imada.
