Jam packed with Crosby's unique brand of catchy, homespun dream pop, "Twins" (Maisonneuve Music, 2017) offers a pastiche of indie-electronica, indie-folk rock and indie-psych rock. "Nobody Else" is a heartfelt guitar-driven indie-rock anthem that uses repetition to its advantage. "We got a language / That nobody else, nobody else knows" Crosby chants as he invites the listener into his dreamy, kaleidoscopic dreamworld. It's a track that could fit in seamlessly on a Captured Tracks playlist with the likes of bands like DIIV or Beach Fossils, while the spirit of pop-rock juggernauts The Cure and shoegaze legends My Bloody Valentine work beneath the surface. "Lightning," a smooth soft-rock number, features glockenspiel, Rhodes, piano and stormy sound effects. The poppier first half of the track is akin to Montreal artists such as TOPS, Mac Demarco and Sean Nicolas-Savage, while the minimalism-inspired second half of the track might draw comparisons to Radiohead or Sufjan Stevens. No album is complete without a slow jam, and the second-to-last track "Deep In Yr Mind" settles things down to a decidedly glacial pace. Hypnotic guitar lines and nostalgia-soaked organ sounds swim under Crosby's lyrical confessions until a four-part string section elevates the song's expansive, emotional chorus. With "Twins," James Wyatt Crosby delivers melody-driven dream pop at its finest.
