KUMU is Singer, Songwriter, Multi-Instrumentalist, and Music Producer Dave Lovett in Austin, TX. KUMU is a Hawaiian word meaning “teacher, source of knowledge, beginning, or origin.” Listeners liken him to “Danger Mouse” or “Thievery Corporation” and suggest his songs are reminiscent of “Imagine Dragons” meets “Passion Pit”. KUMU music is a tempting concoction of Indie Rock and Indietronica with a splash of Neo Soul and a dash of Hip Hop. Working with a variety of artists from a range of contrasting genres to create a compilation of tracks with a common thread is what sets him apart.
His vast array of projects spanning nearly two decades encompass a variety of musical styles which has been the culmination to his creation of KUMU. Between solo projects and collaboration with various bands, he has recorded and produced 3 albums, 4 EP’s, and has also toured much of Europe and the U.S. One of his bands, “Red Planet Empire,” released an EP entitled “Origami Town” in 2015 and won an award for their Music Video “Feet Back on the Ground” in 2016. Another track on the EP, “Jodie’s Last Ride,” received Honorable Mention in the Billboard World Song Contest. He has collaborated, produced, co-produced, and performed live with various popular artists in the Austin area including MC Overlord, Ben Tyler Johnson, Niel Nasset, and Micah Wagner at Okin Studios. Dave is like a musical scientist, he enjoys playing with sounds as if they were chemicals. He is passionate about discovering his own formulas for creating captivating music, as well as building off the innovations of other brilliant artists, bands, and producers. Some of his mentors are Brian Wilson, George Martin, Dr. Dre, Jeff Bass, Danger Mouse, The Killers, Broken Bells, and Elton John. Being a chameleon, he has been able to find a way to earn a living in the ever changing music industry. For many years, the income from live shows as a piano bar entertainer has supported his music production costs. Although piano bar is a steady gig, his true passion is original music. He spends most of his time writing and producing in the comfort of his home studio. In the sea of mediocrity for those known as “bedroom producers,” out of Dave’s home studio comes high budget sounds comparable to those of high caliber studios. Dave acknowledges there are far more talented musicians out there than he, so his strategy to stay ahead of the game has been his work ethic. He has an overwhelming desire to woodshed, research, and learn new techniques to reach that next level of ingenuity.
