Gawy is an independent Egyptian band that has been an active participant in the local artistic scene since September 2015, giving at least 30 performances so far.
Since it had first been formed, Gawy has been performing an alternative form of art, a unique artistic state blending the power of words with distinctive tunes, putting them into a contemporary musical form.
In March 2017, the band released its first album “Albek Yesaa” (Your Heart is Big Enough) that included seven tracks recorded at a live concert held especially for the album.
The name “Gawy” is derived from incense that releases a remarkably attractive scent, vividly
describing the distinguished mix of poetry and songs, recited and sung in colloquial Egyptian Arabic
during Gawy’s shows.
Gawy is not just a band. Rather it’s an artistic project. Most recently, it published a poetry collection
entitled ‘Gawy’ promoted during the recently held Cairo International Book Fair. The book had won the
Abdul-Rahman El-Abnoudy Prize for Colloquial Poetry and Critical Studies for 2021.
Gawy’s pursuit further paid off. For the first time in Egypt’s artistic history, an Egyptian band has
contributed to a Marvel production. Atshan Ya Zeina (I’m Yearning, Zeina), a Gawy hit, has been
included in The Black Widow released in July 2021, starring Scarlett Johansson.
