Waxsimile Productions is a record label and production company based in Los Angeles, California that blends the highest level of analog production with a wide roaming taste in music. True to their name, Waxsimile Productions presses high-end vinyl for every release in order to showcase the one aspect of music they value over all others: the performance. In an industry where dozens of takes per song aren’t unusual, Waxsimile Productions takes us back to the inspiration of music that is made live in the moment, created as a dialogue between master artists, and alive with vibrant sound. With decades of experience in the music industry, Waxsimile Production’s director Tim Boyle knows what works and what doesn’t. He’s worked with everyone from Peter Frampton to The Rolling Stones, recorded at classic, era-defining studios like Wally Heider Recordings and Sound City Studios, and has an IMDB page that’s pages long. For years, he was the go-to score mixer in Hollywood, a distinction that earned him a place in such iconic works as Terminator 2, The Hunt for Red October, The Addams Family, and many more. Working with large film orchestras, both in the recording and mixing stage, Boyle attuned his ears to the smallest details, a talent that’s at the core of Waxsimile Productions’ work. Over his years in the industry, Boyle has learned to only work with the best. To press the vinyl for each Waxsimile Productions release, he works exclusively with a small American pressing plant which he personally inspected himself. All the records are mastered by one of the best mastering engineers in the business: Ron McMasters at Capitol Records, and the art director for most albums is Art Sciano, a noted jazz album cover artist from the 1970s. “We want to have the ultimate vinyl product,” Boyle explains, “and that’s what we’re able to offer right now.” “I was raised on vinyl, and I was a retail and wholesale guy for many years,” Boyle says. “I fell in love with vinyl. I still have 6,000 records in my collection that I listen to all the time. I got hired by Van Dyke Parks and Van Dyke and I recorded an album for Joanna Newsome called Ys. Everything on that album, it was all analogue. Nothing digital at all. That got me back interested in vinyl again. I'll take out Ys and use it as a comparison on my turntable when comparing with new vinyl.” With many such masterful albums under his belt, and a taste for curation that’s respected throughout Los Angeles, Boyle’s ear is attuned to the best artists ranging across genre. Waxsimile’s catalogue embraces singer-songwriters, vocal groups, instrumental improvisation, world music, and even genre-bending collaborations like underground hip-hop mixed with a Balkan brass orchestra. It’s an eclectic catalogue, but what ties everything together at Waxsimile Productions is a drive to get the best sound from the best performances, and to get it in an authentic and organic way. This drive is what keeps Boyle going: “I’m getting older and I have a different perspective of what I’m doing and who I am,” he says. “I’m working as hard as I ever have, I’m just doing it a different way.”
