Coming from a talented musical family, Karkanawi's passion for music is Genetic. His family's love for music made him exposed to a wealth of music as a child, all of which influenced his development. He was only 5 years old when he started playing music on his toy musical keyboard. Fascinated with classical music and enchanted with the idea of creating it, he started realizing that composing classical music is his main goal in life. However, being a musician in his homeland of Saudi Arabia, was never an easy choice, where music is considered as a religiously controversial issue. But, he never stopped composing music. He was 23 years old when he first started studying music, when his parents decided supporting him to study Musicology at Notre Dame University of Beirut, Lebanon. There, his musical ambitions continued to grow, aided by the sounds of his oriental heritage and his wide knowledge of classical music repertoire, passionately developing unique rich musical language and authentic at the same time. In Lebanon, Karkanawi's star started to shine as an Avant Garde talented composer, an outstanding Academic Researcher in Musicology, and an exceptional Ethno-musicologist with broad culture. Karkanawi's Professor Rev. Elie Kesrouani introduced his music saying:"Forget your old ways of listening to music and let your auditory faculties undergo a new baptism! Come, enter the “Karkanawi” temple to embrace the inspiration of sounds. The new musical language of Karkanawi is destined to remain beyond boundaries of time, so unique and personal it is." Rev. Prof. Kesrouani continues: "Despite the great novelty of his musical language, Karkanawi does not hesitate to savour Oriental and Saudi ethnic themes developed and molded into the body of his intangible musical being. In melodic and rhythmic themes alike, he is a composer, a subtle ethnomusicologist who reflects equally in melodic and rhythmic themes the immanent existence of the soul of the people, the oriental soul in its primitive state, becoming the soul of Karkanawi and by extension the universal soul." Said Professor Elie Kesrouani, Visiting Professor at Yale University, Ph. D. Co-Director for Research at the Faculté de Musique et de Musicologie, Paris IV Sorbonne.
